Since the tragic events of September 11, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (Academy) has been working to assist all nurse practitioners (NPs) with information about emergency management and mass casualty disaster efforts. Historically, nursing has always been an active participant in the response to and the management of emergency events. However, in recent years disaster preparedness has not been wide spread – especially in arenas related to use of weapons of mass destruction, biological/chemical warfare and terrorism.
