Reviewer Information

The JAANP Volunteer Reviewer Pool is composed of Advanced Practice Nurses who are clinicians and academics from many geographical areas and specialties. We are always seeking qualified new reviewers to participate in the process of providing a cutting edge professional journal for nurse practitioners around the world. If you are interested in becoming a JAANP reviewer click the following link and send us your email address and enter Reviewer Volunteer in the Subject field :  cpierson@aanp.org   You will receive a reply requesting details about your credentials, work affiliation, contact information, and areas of expertise.

JAAANP peer reviewers, are uncompensated volunteers who are interested in participating in the advancement of nursing science. Those who complete reviews are listed in the Journal at the end of each year as a token of our appreciation. (A PDF copy of the most recent Reviewer Credits can be found here via the link at the bottom of this page.)

The JAANP uses a double blind peer-review review process (neither the reviewer nor the author ever know each other's identities). Multiple reviewers are assigned to each manuscript based on the reviewers' expertise and availability. The entire process is computerized and done by email, which helps minimize mailing expenses for the reviewers and shortens time for the review process.

A typical review will take about 1-2 hours depending on the type of manuscript and the reviewer's familiarity with the content. Our reviewers are expected act as "content experts" and not editors; we don't expect you to rewrite a manuscript. JAANP Guidelines for Quality Peer Review written by the editor specifically outline the expectations for reviews. (A PDF copy of the most recent Reviewer Guidelines can be found here via the link at the bottom of this page.)

We assign manuscripts for review according to our needs and our reviewers areas of expertise and workload. This means that the frequency of our requests for an individual reviewer's services will be determined by the content of the articles submitted to the JAANP for publication. One or two reviews per year is a typical workload for our reviewers.

We understand that our reviewers are busy people so, we always query a reviewer by email as to their availability and interest before actually sending an electronic manuscript file to them for review. We ask that reviews be accomplished within three weeks; however, we can extend that time when necessary. We have found that beyond that time frame, many people tend to forget about a due review and then we have to remind them.

A PDF copy of the JAANP Review Form is available via the Review form link below. This form is used to provide the editor and the authors specific reviewer feedback regarding the manuscript. Anonomized copies of the most salient reviews are sent to the authors along with a letter from the editor after the review process is complete.
